Timely opinion piece by Karen Walker! This is a conversation that was on repeat with designers last weekend at Austin Fashion Week 2016. Fast-fashion and the related demands and pressures on designers and their businesses are unsustainable. Everyone is feeling the fatigue! And, independent labels and young designers, no matter how on-trend or timely their designs, are ill-suited to compete with the mega fast-fashion retailers.
Fashion is a consumer-driven business and current consumption of clothes and accessories seems to be based primarily on immediacy and low cost. But sooner or later a shift will occur. There is simply no personal style to be found in trying, buying, tossing, and repeating.
I appreciate and support those designers who are ahead of the shift away from fast-fashion. Their focus on designing and delivering well crafted, quality staples that enhance a personally curated, sustainable wardrobe with individual style is what fashion is all about.
